OBJECT: CASTLES of ZUCCO and CUCAGNA

Two ruins of fortified castles of the 12th century are situated on a hill on 300m and 350m a.s., 30 min. walking distance from the valley.

Today the castle of Cucagna is a building site, unique example of philological reconstruction, open to young professionals of all the world interested in historical architecture, restoration and reconstruction, archaeology and history of art, traditional working techniques and materials.

A special aim of the course is to stimulate the collaboration between architects, archaeologists restorers and specialised craftsmen concerning the research and the conservation of cultural heritage in theory and practice.

MATTERS OF STUDY AND RESEARCH 2010:

The programme of the International Summer Seminar of Medieval architecture and Archaeology is adapting every year to the latest development of the building site in progress. In summer 2010 there will be offered three different study sections:

1) Archaeological excavation

(Holder of the licence is the Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg (D), the excavation works are going to be done under the supervision of the archaeological survey of Friuli-V.G..).

The stratigraphical documentation will provide important explanations about the history of construction and destruction of the castles. In 2010 there are planned further excavation sites outside the inner castle walls of Cucagna to the north and to the west side in order to understand the extension and different functions of the outposts.

The excavations will be directed in site by M.A. Holger Grönwald, A.-L.-University Freiburg (D) and by Dr. Isabel Ahumada Silva (archaeological survey of Udine (I)

2) Consolidation and conservation of archaeological founds

The course in conservation of the archaeological founds related to the latest excavations done in the castle of Cucagna is directed by the restorer Tobias
Friedrich of the A.-L.- University Freiburg (D).

The course is dealing with conservation and consolidation techniques for metal objects and with the reassembling of medieval ceramics , pottery and glass.

Final aim of the course is the conservation and preparation of archaeological objects to be once exposed in the restored Palace of Cucagna Castle.

3) Restoration and consolidation of medieval wall structures and floor levels

The main intention of this course , directed by the architects Roberto Raccanello & Katharina v. Stietencron, is to improve the collaboration between architects, conservators and archaeologists regarding the interpretation and conservation of archaeological excavation sites.

The architects will have to translate the archaeological plans and sections into an
architectural project, giving an interpretation to the different wall structures or pavement levels, deciding about conservation or consolidation techniques,
about reconstruction or integration of missing elements, about the final presentation of the site as an organic context.

The archaeologists on the other hand should inquire into architectural founds, study wall structures and textures and medieval building technology in general. They too should start to think about the future preservation and presentation of the excavation fields.

The course 2010 will deal with the consolidation of the wall structures (Palace IV) which emerged during the last summer on the west side of Cucagna castle.

Participants will have to do an accurate documentation of the existing state, afterwards they will have to work out a suitable conservation and
restoration project and in the end they will participate in the consolidation works on site done by specialised masons and stoneworkers.

The sculptor Dumitru Ion Serban will introduce the different old methods of chiselling out.
